Main objectives of this material

  • Develop vocabulary for making and keeping commitments, including phrases such as keep your word, let someone down, count on someone, give someone a hand, miss a deadline, or else, I mean it and back out, practised through a twelve-phrase tone-marker sort, an eight-item first-letter retrieval task, flashcards and a glossary.
  • Strengthen reading and speaking skills by analysing six short authentic-style messages (a parent's text, a manager's email with an offer of help, a friend's invitation, a gym advert, an angry note on a door and a colleague's travel tip), matching senders, answering seven detail questions and discussing which messages students would welcome and which would annoy them.
  • earn and practise the first conditional as five different speech acts, using If you..., I'll..., Unless..., imperative + and, imperative + or and the emphatic I will to make a promise, a threat, a warning, an offer or give advice, and to change one function into another.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will discover that one structure, the first conditional, does five communicative jobs. They read six short messages from a parent, a manager, a friend, a gym, a neighbour and a colleague, match the six senders and answer seven comprehension questions before any grammar is named. They then label eight sentences as a promise, threat, warning, offer or advice using a decision diagram, complete a pattern box for if, unless and imperative + and / or, and do fourteen rewrites, including four that turn a threat into a warning or an offer. They then say five identical sentences first as a promise, then as a threat. Students write three messages from five situation cards, reply to a partner, and negotiate The Flatmate Deal role play with one promise, one offer and one warning. Homework adds retrieval, four rewrites and three written messages or a voice note. The package includes an interactive fillable worksheet, a teacher version with model messages, 21 slides, 30 flashcards and 24 speaking cards. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify the function of an If you..., I'll... sentence, write all five functions with the right tone, and rewrite conditionals with unless and imperative + and / or.
