  • Improve reading, listening and speaking skills by analysing a short cultural text about the British Harvest Festival and a BBC Newsround report on a Manchester school, then discussing food donations, community support and seasonal traditions in different countries.
  • Learn and practise emphatic do, does and did in the Present Simple and Past Simple, using sentences such as I do like hot chocolate in autumn! and We did donate a lot of food yesterday to stress feelings and show that something is really true.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore how autumn is celebrated and why the Harvest Festival matters to schools and communities in the UK. They will build B1 vocabulary related to farming, charity and household budgets, matching words such as vital things, afford and distribute to clear definitions and using them in context. Students will read a short culture note, watch a BBC Newsround video report about a school food collection, and answer multiple-choice and true/false questions. They will then share opinions on food banks and gratitude, and practise emphatic do, does and did by rewriting sentences such as She does work hard at the food bank. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to describe autumn traditions, talk about helping people who struggle with the cost of living, and add natural emphasis to their spoken English.
