Main objectives of this material

  • Develop practical vocabulary related to computers, phones and everyday technology, including phrasal verbs such as log in, set up, back up, shut down, plug in, scroll down and run out of battery, plus support words like charger, restart and frozen.
  • Strengthen reading and speaking skills by completing a gapped quick start guide for a new laptop, analysing a phone call to an IT helpdesk, and role-playing three escalating tech problems in pairs.
  • Learn and practise separable and non-separable phrasal verbs using patterns such as plug it in, back them up and log in to your account, and give step-by-step instructions with First, Then, Finally to solve a problem over the phone.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore what to do when technology stops working, through a picture-matching task, a gapped quick start guide for a new laptop and a phone call between an employee and the IT helpdesk. They will build vocabulary related to devices and everyday tech problems, including seven high-frequency phrasal verbs, and notice how separable phrasal verbs work with pronouns (plug it in, shut it down). They will strengthen reading skills with true or false questions and speaking skills through a helpdesk role play with three scenario cards, useful phrases for users and helpdesk staff, and instructions with First, Then, Finally. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to describe a simple tech problem, follow and give basic instructions, and use the tech phrasal verbs accurately in an English lesson plan built for real-life situations.
