Main objectives of this material
- Develop practical vocabulary related to directions, places in town and public transport, including phrases such as go straight on, take the second turning on the left, go past, opposite, platform, and a return ticket.
- Improve speaking and reading skills by analysing a model street dialogue, following a route on an illustrated town map, and reading a real-style train ticket for key travel information.
- Learn and practise functional language for asking the way and checking information using Excuse me, how do I get to...?, Sorry, can you say that again?, and Where do I get off? to handle everyday travel situations politely.
What students are going to cover
In this lesson, students will learn how to find their way around a new town in English. They will build A2 vocabulary for directions and transport through picture matching and a street map, and use prepositions such as next to, between and on the corner to describe where places are. Students follow a model dialogue on a map, complete a language bank for asking and giving directions, and practise buying tickets at a station. The lesson ends with an info-gap map activity in pairs and a ticket office role-play. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to ask for directions politely, give clear step-by-step directions using a map, and buy a train or bus ticket.
