Main objectives of this material

  • Develop advanced vocabulary related to consumer psychology and persuasion, including terms and expressions such as impulse buy, buyer's remorse, scarcity, social proof, anchoring, the decoy effect and loss aversion.
  • Strengthen speaking and reading skills by analysing a short text on the psychology of impulse buying, decoding three fictional adverts line by line and discussing where good marketing ends and manipulation begins.
  • Learn and practise analytical verb collocations such as play on our fear of missing out, tap into the need to belong and nudge you towards the pricier option to explain how advertising works, then apply them in a persuasive campaign pitch and its honest rewrite.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore why we buy things we never planned to buy through a short text on the psychology of impulse buying and three fictional adverts for headphones, a skincare serum and a gym membership. They will build vocabulary related to consumer psychology and advertising, from scarcity and anchoring to the decoy effect, while strengthening their speaking skills by spotting the persuasion technique in each advert and quoting the line that gives it away. They will then practise analytical language such as the ad preys on loss aversion and, as a marketing team, write and pitch their own manipulative campaign. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to name the tricks behind an advert, explain how they work in precise English, and describe their own shopping decisions with confidence.
