Main objectives of this material

  • Develop essential vocabulary related to world geography, including continents, countries and nationality adjectives such as Canadian, Polish, Japanese, Thai, and French, organised by the suffix patterns -an/-ian, -ish, and -ese.
  • Improve listening and speaking skills by analysing the Jimmy Kimmel Live street-interview video Can You Name a Country?, answering multiple-choice and true/false questions, and discussing why many adults struggle to find a single country on a world map.
  • Learn and practise articles with geographical names using the zero article (Japan, Europe), the definite article (the United Kingdom, the Pacific Ocean), and the indefinite article (a country in Europe) to describe places accurately.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore how well people really know the world map through the Jimmy Kimmel Live video Can You Name a Country?, in which street interviewees confuse continents with countries. This countries and nationalities ESL lesson builds vocabulary for continents, countries and nationality adjectives, from Brazilian to Vietnamese. Learners check their understanding with multiple-choice and true/false questions, sort ten places into continents and countries, and complete a nationality table. They then practise articles with geographical names, choosing between the definite, indefinite and zero article, and discuss how geography is taught in schools. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to tell continents from countries, describe people, food and products with nationality adjectives, and write a short country profile that uses articles correctly.
