Main objectives of this material
- Develop the compact vocabulary of professional messages, including following, pending, ahead of, as of, bar, based on and provided that, through an eight-item compressor gap-fill, an eight-phrase bloat list (due to the fact that becomes because) and flashcards.
- Strengthen editing and speaking skills by judging three before-and-after drafts, rewriting 20 authentic messages (team chat, client emails, a voicemail, a text to a landlord) as one-line notification previews, and giving the same spoken work update in 60, 30 and then 15 seconds.
- Learn and practise nominalisation versus verbs, participle clauses such as Having checked the figures, I can confirm... and zero redundancy, and add one nuance using negation (far from happy), reservation (up to a point) and irony.
What students are going to cover
In this lesson, students will practise saying more with fewer words in the messages they actually send at work and in daily life. They start with a 10-second test on a long team-chat message, then judge three pairs of drafts and name the five moves of concise writing: delete the padding, cut the echo, choose the strong verb, pack a clause into a noun and use a participle clause. After an eight-item compressor gap-fill, they rewrite 20 real messages in three rounds (team chat, clients and partners, life admin) so each works as a one-line notification preview, then go the other way and add one nuance to eight short sentences with provided that, hardly or not exactly. The lesson ends with a 60-30-15 spoken stand-up and four reply cards. Homework adds retrieval, a cut-and-add task and a choice of a three-sentence client reply, an edit of two real inbox messages or a recorded voice note; the package includes slides, flashcards and speaking cards. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to turn a long message into one clear line, use participle clauses without dangling them, and add a negation, reservation or ironic twist in a few words.
