Main objectives of this material

  • Develop vocabulary related to Halloween and its history, including spooky, creepy, spirits, medieval, trick or treat, carve, brief and the informal phrasal verb crack on, through an eight-item definition matching task, an eight-sentence gap-fill and a three-column glossary with example sentences.
  • Strengthen listening comprehension and cultural discussion by watching a BBC Newsround video on the origins of Halloween and answering eight multiple-choice questions about the Celtic festival of Samhain, All Saints' Day and All Hallows' Eve, the medieval custom of souling, disguises to scare away spirits, and the switch from carved turnips to pumpkins after Irish immigrants reached America in the 19th century.
  • Learn and practise expressing preferences with I'd rather + base verb, I'd rather not, I'd rather... than... and Would you rather... or...? in a ten-item grammar exercise and a Halloween "Would You Rather?" speaking game, so learners can state a choice and give a reason with because.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore how Halloween developed from ancient Celtic and Christian traditions by watching the BBC Newsround video Trick or Treat? A Brief History of Halloween Traditions. After a three-question warm-up about October 31st and autumn harvest festivals, they build Halloween vocabulary through an eight-item matching task and an eight-sentence gap-fill. They then complete an eight-question multiple-choice video quiz on Samhain, souling, costumes and turnip lanterns, and compare Halloween with festivals for ancestors and folklore in their own culture in a three-question discussion. The grammar stage teaches I'd rather and Would you rather with four rule boxes and ten complete-or-rewrite sentences, followed by a five-prompt speaking game with the Twinkl video Would You Rather? HALLOWEEN EDITION!. Homework combines vocabulary sentences, I'd rather rewrites and an 80-100-word paragraph. The package includes a teacher version with answers, a fillable student worksheet, a 17-slide deck, 36 flashcards (including 20 everyday "Would You Rather?" cards) and 22 speaking cards. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to explain three stages in the history of Halloween, describe a festival with words such as spooky and medieval, and say what they would rather do using I'd rather... than... because...
