Main objectives of this material

  • Develop everyday vocabulary with twelve high-frequency collocations - make a decision, make a mistake, make plans, do the laundry, do someone a favour, do your best, have a break, have a good time, have a chat, take a shower, take a photo and take a day off - met in a diary text, a four-column sorting table, a tick-the-verb classification task and a lesson glossary.
  • Strengthen reading and speaking skills by analysing a 170-word diary text (Mia's week in four verbs, from a wrong year in a Monday report to a hundred dog photos on a Friday off), completing four mini-dialogues with 15 gaps, paraphrasing six sentences and telling a partner about your own week day by day with follow-up questions.
  • Learn and practise the rule of thumb for do, make, have and take (do for work and chores, make for creating and deciding, have for eating and experiences, take for short chosen actions) and apply it to eight bonus expressions such as take a nap, make a noise and have a meeting, then correct seven wrong verbs in a spot-the-mistake task.

What students are going to cover

In this lesson, students will explore why learners say make a photo or do a mistake and how to choose the right verb among do, make, have and take. They take a four-item quick test, read Mia's diary, answer four questions and sort the twelve target expressions into a DO / MAKE / HAVE / TAKE table. A visual rule of thumb follows, tested on an eight-item tick-box classification. Students then correct seven wrong verbs in a spot-the-mistake exercise, complete four mini-dialogues with 15 gaps and rewrite six sentences using the new verb-noun collocations, before describing their own week in a Monday-to-Sunday speaking grid. The final challenge, The Messy Week, is a story about Leo's disastrous week with ten collocation mistakes to find, correct and retell using at least eight expressions. The package includes a teacher's version with answers, an interactive fillable PDF, an 18-slide presentation, original illustrations, a real-life mission and homework with a self-checkable gap-fill and a write-or-record task. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to choose the correct verb in the twelve target expressions, correct common do / make / have / take mistakes and describe their week using at least eight everyday collocations.
