Past Tenses

About this set A2 · B1 · B2

Get 64 past tenses speaking cards that take A2-B2 adult students from the past simple to the past continuous and past perfect, with questions about this morning, yesterday evening, last weekend, the last time you ate out, your last trip - real moments the student actually remembers, so nobody ever answers "I don't know".

  • Practise the past simple with sixteen cards tied to one real moment each: this morning, last night, last weekend, your last working day, your last day off, your last trip, the last message you sent, the weather yesterday. Each card shows the past forms the question needs (get → got, buy → bought) and comes with a quick reference on -ed spelling and pronunciation, questions with did, negatives and was/were, plus a bank of 24 irregular verbs.
  • Practise the past continuous with sixteen moments fixed in time: seven o'clock this morning, this time yesterday, midnight last weekend, the moment your phone rang, the last time it rained. Every card asks what was in progress at that moment and what happened next, with a reference on when and while, state verbs, and banks of -ing forms and time words.
  • Choose which past tense in sixteen gapped questions that mix the past simple, past continuous and past perfect: the student builds the question from the verbs in brackets (___ (you / still / sleep) when your alarm ___ (go off)?), answers it and asks it back. A two-slide key for the teacher gives every correct form.
  • Tell the story with sixteen narrative prompts from the student's own year: the last time you were late, a plan that changed at the last minute, a nice surprise, a problem with technology, a bad night's sleep, your last lazy morning. Each card names the linking words to use (while, by the time, in the end) and adds a teacher twist question in the past perfect that the student must answer mid-story.
