Main objectives of this material
- Develop practical everyday vocabulary related to plans, arrangements and small daily problems, including ten high-frequency phrasal verbs such as put off, call off, pick up, look after, run out of, run into, figure out and get by, each with its natural collocations.
- Improve speaking and reading skills by analysing a natural conversation between two friends who have to move a weekend plan, and discussing real situations such as cancelled meetings, last-minute changes and the things we keep postponing.
- Learn and practise the word order rules of phrasal verbs, including separable verbs such as turn it off and pick her up, inseparable verbs such as look after them and run into him, and three-part verbs such as run out of time, so that pronouns always land in the right place.
What students are going to cover
In this lesson, students will explore how English speakers really talk about plans that change at the last minute, through a conversation in which one friend has to move a Saturday trip. They will build practical vocabulary around arrangements, favours and everyday chaos, meeting ten phrasal verbs in context before working out the grammar behind them. A guided discovery stage sorts the verbs into four types and clarifies where the object goes, followed by gap-fills and transformation tasks that target the most persistent error at this level: pick up me instead of pick me up. Students then use the language in three role plays about postponing, cancelling and rescuing a plan. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to postpone or cancel an arrangement politely, ask someone to collect them or something they need, and place pronouns correctly with separable and inseparable phrasal verbs.
