Main objectives of this material
- Develop negotiation vocabulary for the workplace, including meet halfway, a deal-breaker, bottom line, a counteroffer, I could live with that, leave room for, non-negotiable and a win-win, through an eight-item mini-dialogue gap-fill, a phrasebook and flashcards.
- Strengthen speaking and negotiation skills by comparing a cold role-play about a Friday report deadline with a 13-line model conversation in which a marketing manager and a web team lead agree a launch date, a reduced scope and a cost split of 3,500, then negotiating two rounds of a hidden-priorities info-gap on a data dashboard and a product video quote.
- Learn and practise the six negotiation moves (explore, set limits, offer, counter, accept, close) using What if we...?, as long as, provided, Our bottom line is... and So, to sum up... to turn blunt replies into polite, firm negotiating language.
What students are going to cover
In this lesson, students will negotiate from the first minute instead of only talking about negotiation. They answer six workplace requests with a condition in a "Yes, if..." warm-up, attempt a three-minute cold role-play about a report deadline, and then analyse a model conversation to complete a four-point deal summary and match seven negotiation moves to the lines where they happen. Students build a negotiation language bank organised by six moves, complete eight mini-conversations with the target expressions and rewrite six blunt replies such as Your price is crazy in a diplomatic way. The main task is Hidden Priorities: each student receives a secret role card with a top priority, a deal-breaker and an easy give, negotiates four issues in two rounds, and scores points by guessing the partner's priorities. The Business English lesson plan includes a teacher version with answers and timings, an interactive worksheet, slides, flashcards, speaking cards and a homework task to write a counteroffer email. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to ask about the other side's priorities, set a limit politely and close a deal with a clear summary.
