Problem at Check-in – hotel

About this set A2 · B1

Information-gap hotel English role-plays for teachers of adult A2-B1 learners. Students practise checking in, complaining about a hotel room and negotiating a solution when the hotel is overbooked, from both sides of the front desk: as the guest and as the receptionist. In every role-play the receptionist can give only one extra, so students have to negotiate for it.

  • Hotel Talk (A2-B1) – 16 word cards: key hotel vocabulary (reservation, fully booked, overbooked, upgrade, early check-in, late check-out, deposit, non-refundable, complimentary, compensation), each with a simple meaning and a talk task about the student’s own travel.
  • I Have a Booking! (B1) – 12 guest role-plays: the student arrives to an overbooked hotel, a room that isn’t ready, a party next door, broken air conditioning, a booking the hotel can’t find or a surprise on the bill, and negotiates a better room, a discount or another extra.
  • I’m Sorry, We’re Full (B1) – 12 receptionist role-plays: the student follows the hotel policy and deals with difficult guests: a family with no family room, a guest locked out at 2 am, a taxi that didn’t come, a cancelled flight, a deposit the guest refuses to pay.
  • Teacher cards – 24 secret cards: the other side of every role-play: what the teacher knows, what they can offer, the one extra they can give and a twist that makes the student react and negotiate.
