That’s Not What I Meant

About this set B1 · B2

Get 64 speaking cards for clarifying and repairing communication that teach B1-B2 adult students what to do when a conversation goes wrong: how to paraphrase, check what someone means, ask for details, be precise and correct a wrong interpretation diplomatically, with expressions like in other words, so you're saying…?, could you be more specific?, just to be clear and that's not what I meant.

  • Build a repair toolkit of 16 clarifying expressions, each with a simple meaning and a talk task about the student's own life: explaining their job in other words, checking a teacher's opinion, asking what someone is getting at, confirming plans, correcting a wrong summary of their weekend.
  • Practise paraphrasing in English with 16 explanation tasks: a job explained to Grandma, a word with no translation, an app for someone from 1995, a 30-second lift pitch, a professional term without using the term; the teacher twist on every card makes the student explain it again, another way.
  • Handle vague messages and misunderstandings: turn "a quick chat later", "ASAP" and "almost ready" into clear facts, then correct a manager who hears criticism, a client who suspects the price or a friend who feels rejected, and sort out mix-ups like 200 chairs instead of 20. No model answers on the cards: the student produces the language.
